Hawaii Electric Vehicles Policies
For the past year, PROPARK Inc. has been
working with our Clients to provide information and infrastructure
proposals to comply with the upcoming deadline of December 31, 2011
for the Hawaii Electric Vehicles Policies.
The law basically requires all public
accessible garages and parking lots over 100 stalls to provide 1% of
the total stalls for Electric Vehicle use. At least one of these
stalls must have an electric charger installed. This
requirement would increase as the number of Electric Vehicles
registered in the state increase. Below are a summary of 3 bills
that pertain to these policies. Detailed information on them
can be found in the Links section below.
In July of 1997 S.B. NO. 1160 - Act 290.
This was
the start of Hawaii's plan toward energy efficiency.
In July of 2009
S.B. NO. 1202 - Act 156.
This established the development of non-fossil
fuel transportation as a state policy goal. Requires the
designation of parking spaces for electric vehicles and provides
penalties for parking a non-electric vehicle in reserved spaces.
Requires State and county agencies to follow a priority list
when purchasing energy-efficient vehicles, including electric
vehicles. Includes requirements for developing an electric
vehicle infrastructure. Establishes the Transportation Energy
Transformation Grant Fund Program.
In July of 2010
S.B. NO. 2231 - Act 186.
This Prohibits prevention of
installing an electric vehicle charging station on or near the
parking stall of any multi-family residence or townhouse.
